Abstract Repeatedly frying process of dietary edible oil has a potential role in the generation of free radicals. Therefore, questions have always been raised as to whether, there is an efficient and economical method to reduce the harmful effects of repeated use of frying edible oil. Since hibiscus has been stated to have a wide variety of therapeutic effects, it was important to investigate its properties against harmful effects of free radicals. The current study aspires to find out whether irradiated powder of hibiscus has a protective role against adverse effects of repeated use of frying edible oil. Thirty-five adult male albino rats were equally assigned into five groups. First groupG1 was fed with normal diet as control group, meanwhile, groupG2 the diet mixed with fresh oil, G3 diet mixed with repeatedly frying oil only, G4 diet mixed with frying oil treated with hibiscus and G5 diet mixed with frying oil treated with irradiated hibiscus. Feeding duration was six weeks. Fatty acid analyses of oil as well as peroxide values were determined. Blood and liver samples were collected for biochemical analyses as well as histological study. Repeatedly heated cooked oil has significant increases in peroxide value, acid value, free fatty acid and both conjugated diene and triene compared with repeatedly frying oil treated with hibiscus. Also there are significant increases in cholesterol and triglyceride and impaired in liver functions in G3compared with others. In addition, relative to the hibiscus groups, there is a substantial reduction in oxygen consumption in G3. Both hibiscus as well as irradiated hibiscus attract attention in order to play a vital and economical role against harmful effects of frequent use of frying edible oil on some biological functions but, irradiated hibiscus was more effective.


Resumo O processo de fritura repetida de óleo comestível da dieta tem papel potencial na geração de radicais livres que podem ter efeitos prejudiciais em algumas funções biológicas. Portanto, sempre se questionou se existe uma maneira eficiente e econômica de prevenir ou pelo menos reduzir os efeitos nocivos do uso repetido de óleo comestível para fritar. Como o hibisco tem ampla variedade de efeitos terapêuticos, foi importante investigar suas propriedades como agente antioxidante contra os efeitos nocivos dos radicais livres. O presente estudo pretende descobrir se o pó irradiado de hibisco tem papel protetor contra os efeitos adversos do uso repetido de óleo comestível para fritar. Trinta e cinco ratos albinos machos adultos foram divididos igualmente em cinco grupos. O primeiro grupo G1 foi alimentado com dieta normal como grupo controle, enquanto o grupo G2 dieta misturada com óleo fresco, dieta G3 misturada com óleo de fritura repetida, dieta G4 misturada com óleo de fritura tratada com hibisco e dieta G5 misturada com óleo de fritura tratada com hibisco irradiado. A duração da alimentação foi de seis semanas. Foram determinadas as análises de ácidos graxos de óleo, bem como os valores de peróxidos. Amostras de sangue e fígado foram coletadas para análises bioquímicas e estudo histológico. O óleo cozido repetidamente aquecido tem aumentos significativos no valor de peróxido, valor de ácido, ácido graxo livre e dieno e trieno conjugados em comparação com óleo de fritura repetidamente tratado com hibisco. Também há aumentos significativos no colesterol e triglicérides e comprometimento das funções hepáticas no G3 em comparação com outros. Além disso, em relação aos grupos de hibiscos, há uma redução substancial no consumo de oxigênio no G3. Tanto o hibisco como o hibisco irradiado chamam atenção por desempenhar papel vital e econômico contra os efeitos nocivos do uso frequente de óleo comestível para fritar em algumas funções biológicas, mas o hibisco irradiado foi mais eficaz.

Background and aims We aimed to evaluate the differences in some cardiovascular risk (CVR) factors between adult patients without and with phenylketonuria (PKU) and to explore the correlation between waist circumference (WC) and body mass index (BMI) with the previous variables. Methods This was an observational case–control study that included patients older than 18 years with a diagnosis of classic PKU. The controls were age- and sex-matched individuals. We collected demographic, epidemiological, clinical, and laboratory variables, including WC, BMI, and lipid profile parameters. Results A total of 72 patients (25 controls and 47 cases) were included with a mean age of 36 years, of which 45 (62%) were women. Adult PKU patients showed lower high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c) and higher triglyceride (TG) levels than the control group. We found an association between WC and uric acid (B=0.024, P=0.013, 95%CI: 0.005–0.043), TG (B=0.768, P=0.024, 95%CI: 0.107–1.428), and HDL-c (B=−0.254, P=0.026, 95%CI: −0.477 to (−0.032)) levels in PKU patients. However, we did not find any trend between WC and uric acid, TG and HDL-c levels that reached statistical significance (P<0.05) in patients without PKU. Conclusions Waist circumference rather than BMI may better represent the CVR in patients with PKU (AU)


Introducción y objetivos Nuestro objetivo fue evaluar las diferencias en algunos factores de riesgo cardiovascular entre pacientes adultos sin y con fenilcetonuria (FCU) y explorar la correlación del perímetro cintura (PC) e índice de masa corporal (IMC) con las variables previas. Métodos Fue un estudio de casos y controles que incluyó pacientes mayores de 18 años con diagnóstico de FCU clásica. Los controles fueron individuos emparejados por edad y sexo. Se recogieron variables demográficas, epidemiológicas, clínicas y de laboratorio, destacando PC, IMC y parámetros del perfil lipídico. Resultados Se reclutaron 72 pacientes (25 controles y 47 casos) con una edad media de 36 años (62% mujeres). Respecto al grupo control, los pacientes adultos con FCU mostraron niveles más bajos de colesterol de lipoproteínas de alta densidad (HDL-c) y más altos de triglicéridos. En los pacientes con FCU, PC se asoció con los niveles de ácido úrico (B=0,024, P=0,013, 95% CI: 0,005-0,043), triglicéridos (B=0,768, P=0,024, 95% CI: 0,107-1.428) y HDL-c (B=−0,254, P=0,026, 95% CI: −0,477–[−0,032]). Sin embargo, no encontramos ninguna tendencia entre WC y dichas variables que alcanzara significación estadística en los pacientes sin FCU. Aunque observamos una buena correlación entre el IMC y PC en pacientes sin y con FCU, el aumento de PC por unidad de aumento de IMC podría ser mayor en estos últimos. Background: infants receiving full breastfeeding (FBF) regulate their appetites differently from those receiving human milk substitutes (HMS). In addition, early exposure to the dietary cholesterol in human milk could lead to better cholesterol regulation in later stages of life. Therefore, the purpose was to compare lipid profiles in 4-month-old infants and to correlate lipid profile with anthropometric indicators and appetite-regulating hormones according to the type of feeding. Methods: this was a cross-sectional and correlational study, which included 145 mother-infant dyads according to the type of feeding; 64 received FBF, 47 partial breastfeeding (PBF), and 34 HMS. The complete lipid profile, total ghrelin, leptin, peptide YY, and glucagon-like peptide type 1 were measured. Z-scores for weight/age, length/age, weight/length, triceps (TSF) and subscapular folds (SSF) and body mass index for age were also obtained. Results: there were significant differences in triglycerides and LDL cholesterol according to the type of feeding. In the HMS group, an inverse relationship was observed between ghrelin and triglycerides (p = 0.038), ghrelin and total cholesterol (TC) (p = 0.026), and peptide YY and HDL cholesterol (p = 0.017). In the PBF group, a direct relationship was observed between length/age (z) and triglycerides (p = 0.001) and between subscapular folds and TC (p = 0.049). In infants receiving HMS, a direct correlation was observed between weight/age (z) and TC (p = 0.045) and between length/age (z) and LDL cholesterol (p = 0.010). Conclusion: these findings show a relationship between growth, energy reserve, lipid profile, and modulation of appetite-regulating hormones according to the type of feeding they received. (AU)


Introducción: los lactantes que reciben lactancia materna completa (LMC) regulan su apetito de manera diferente a los que reciben sucedáneos de la leche humana (SLH). Además, la exposición temprana al colesterol en la leche humana conduciría a mejor regulación del colesterol en etapas posteriores de la vida. El propósito fue de comparar el perfil lípidos en lactantes de cuatro meses y correlacionarlo con indicadores antropométricos y hormonas reguladoras del apetito según el tipo de alimentación. Métodos: en un estudio transversal y correlacional se incluyeron 145 díadas madre-lactante según el tipo de alimentación; 64 recibieron LMC, 47 lactancia materna parcial (LMP) y 34 SLH. Se midió el perfil lipídico, grelina total, leptina, péptido YY y péptido tipo 1 similar al glucagón. Se obtuvieron puntajes Z para peso/edad, longitud/edad, peso/longitud, pliegue cutáneo tricipital y subescapular e índice de masa corporal para la edad. Resultados: hubo diferencias significativas en triglicéridos y colesterol LDL según el tipo de alimentación. En el grupo HMS se observó una relación inversa entre grelina y triglicéridos (p = 0,038), grelina y colesterol total (TC) (p = 0,026), y péptido YY y colesterol HDL (p = 0,017). En el grupo PBF hubo relación directa entre longitud/edad (z) y triglicéridos (p = 0,001) y entre pliegues subescapulares y CT (p = 0,049). En los lactantes que recibieron HMS, se observó una correlación directa entre peso/edad (z) y CT (p = 0,045) y entre longitud/edad (z) y colesterol LDL (p = 0,010). Introducción: las alteraciones del control glicémico y los lípidos son causas principales de enfermedad cardiovascular. Sin embargo, los patrones metabólicos en el infarto agudo de miocardio no están bien establecidos. Objetivo: el propósito de esta investigación es describir las características metabólicas en pacientes admitidos con infarto de miocardio. Clasificamos los pacientes según el cociente HDL-c/LDL-c y perfiles lipídicos. Método: estudio observacional, descriptivo, retrospectivo en pacientes admitidos al Servicio de Cardiología con infarto agudo de miocardio durante un año. Resultados: 97 pacientes fueron incluidos, predominó el sexo masculino (67%) y el promedio de edad fue 59 años (SD, ±9.9). Las características metabólicas fueron las siguientes: mediana de hemoglobina glicosilada 6.2% (IQR, 5.8-7.5), glucemia en ayunas 107 mg/dL (IQR, 99-152), colesterol total 201 mg/dL (IQR, 165-223), colesterol asociado a lipoproteínas de baja densidad (LDL-c) 123 mg/dL (IQR, 96-146), colesterol asociado a lipoproteínas de alta densidad (HDL-c) 38.2 mg/dL (IQR, 31.8-45.4) y triglicéridos (TG) 161 mg/dL (IQR, 103-234). El cociente HDL-c/LDL-c <0.4 estuvo presente en 75% de los pacientes. Los patientes fueron clasificados según perfiles lipídicos, donde el perfil L-1 [HDL-c ≤40, LDL-c <150, TG <200] y L-2 [HDL-c >40, LDL-c <150, TG <200] en conjunto representaron la mitad de la muestra. Conclusiones: prediabetes, bajos niveles de HDL-c y un cociente HDL-c/LDL-c <0.4 fueron hallazgos frecuentes en infarto de miocardio. Introduction: Alterations in glycemic control and lipids are the main causes of cardiovascular disease. However, metabolic patterns in acute myocardial infarction are not well established. Objective: The purpose of this research is to describe the metabolic characteristics of patients admitted with myocardial infarction. We classified patients according to HDL-c/LDL-c ratio and lipid profiles. Method: observational, descriptive, retrospective study in patients admitted to the Cardiology Department with acute myocardial infarction for one year. Results: 97 patients were included, males predominated (67%) and the mean age was 59 years (SD, ±9.9). Metabolic characteristics were as follows: median glycosylated hemoglobin 6.2% (IQR, 5.8-7.5), fasting blood glucose 107 mg/dL (IQR, 99-152), total cholesterol 201 mg/dL (IQR, 165-223), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c) 123 mg/dL (IQR, 96-146), high-density lipoprotein-associated cholesterol (HDL-c) 38.2 mg/dL (IQR, 31.8-45.4) and triglycerides (TG) 161 mg/dL (IQR, 103-234). The HDL-c/LDL-c ratio <0.4 was present in 75% of patients. Patients were classified according to lipid profiles, where the L-1 HDL-c ≤ 40, LDL-c <150, TG <200] and L-2 ]HDL-c >40, LDL-c <150, TG <200] together represented half of the sample. Conclusions: prediabetes, low HDL-c levels, and an HDL-c/LDL-c ratio <0.4 were frequent findings in myocardial infarction. Introducción: La dislipidemia es uno de los problemas más frecuentes en los niños y adolescentes y su estudio es importante debido a su fuerte correlación con la enfermedad cardiovascular aterosclerótica en adultos. Muchos países desarrollaron valores de referencia nacionales investigando los lípidos séricos utilizando datos basados en la población nacional propia. Nuestro objetivo fue verificar el intervalo de referencia del perfil lipídico calculando las curvas de percentiles a través del método indirecto en nuestra población pediátrica. Materiales y métodos: Se analizaron los resultados de nuestra base de datos utilizando el método indirecto. Luego de aplicar filtros y criterios de exclusión se calcularon los percentiles 25, 50, 75, 95 y 99 para colesterol total (CT), colesterol HDL (C-HDL), colesterol no HDL (C-no-HDL), triglicéridos (TG) y colesterol LDL (C-LDL) y para el C-HDL además se calculó el percentil 10. El valor de referencia para el cambio (RCV) se utilizó para determinar si existía diferencia clínicamente significativa entre los valores de percentiles obtenidos y los utilizados en el consenso de la SAP. Resultados: No se evidenció diferencia clínicamente significativa contra los valores propuesto por la SAP, excepto para los TG para las edades 1,5,7 años en el percentil 95 y para la edad de 8 años en el percentil 75 y 95; para el C-HDL en el percentil 10 para las edades 1,16 y 17 años. Discusión: Se obtuvieron los percentiles de los lípidos y se compararon con los valores de referencia utilizados por el consenso en el que están basados las guías (AU)


Introduction: Dyslipidemia is one of the most common problems in children and adolescents and its study is important because of its strong correlation with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease in adulthood. Many countries have developed national reference values investigating serum lipids using data based on their own national population. Our aim was to verify the lipid profile reference range by calculating percentile curves through the indirect method in our pediatric population. Materials and methods: The results of our database were analyzed using the indirect method. After applying filters and exclusion criteria, the 25th, 50th, 75th, 95th, and 99th percentiles were calculated for total cholesterol (TC), HDL cholesterol (HDL-C), non-HDL cholesterol (non-HDL-C), triglycerides (TG), and LDL cholesterol (LDL-C); for HDL-C, the 10th percentile was also calculated. The reference change values (RCV) were used to determine whether there was a clinically significant difference between the percentile values obtained and those used in the consensus of the Argentine Association of Pediatrics (SAP). Results: There was no clinically significant difference with the values proposed by the SAP, except for TG for ages 1, 5, and 7 years at the 95th percentile and for age 8 years at the 75th and 95th percentile; and for HDL-C at the 10th percentile for ages 1, 16, and 17 years. Discussion: Lipid percentiles were obtained and compared with the reference values used by the consensus on which the guidelines are based (AU)

Resumen Durante la menopausia se producen cambios metabólicos que favorecen la ganancia de peso y la obesidad abdominal, lo cual facilita el desarrollo de dislipidemias y aumenta el riesgo cardiovascular. El propósito del estudio fue comparar el perfil lipídico y los índices de riesgo cardiometabólico (IRCM) entre mujeres posmenopáusicas del Municipio Naguanagua, Estado Carabobo, Venezuela, clasificadas de acuerdo con su grado de adiposidad. El estudio fue de corte transversal, descriptivo, en el cual participaron 205 mujeres con una mediana de edad de 56 años. Se evaluaron indicadores de adiposidad: índice de masa corporal (IMC), porcentaje de grasa corporal (PGC), circunferencia de cintura (CC), e índice cintura/talla (ICT); así como el perfil lipídico y los IRCM. Se encontraron altos porcentajes de exceso de peso (80%), exceso de grasa corporal (92%), obesidad abdominal (61%) y riesgo metabólico de acuerdo con el ICT (69%). Las mujeres con obesidad mostraron los valores más bajos de cHDL, y aquellas con grasa muy alta, obesidad abdominal y riesgo metabólico de acuerdo con el ICT, los valores más elevados del índice TG/HDL. Se recomiendan otros estudios en este grupo poblacional para comprender mejor la asociación encontrada entre el grado de adiposidad y las alteraciones en el metabolismo de los lípidos con el fin de tomar acciones preventivas en estos trastornos relacionados con el síndrome metabólico.


Abstract During menopause, metabolic changes occur that promote weight gain and abdominal obesity, facilitating the development of dyslipidemias and increasing cardiovascular risk. The purpose of the study was to compare the lipid profile and the cardiometabolic risk indexes (IRCM) among postmenopausal women from the Naguanagua Municipality, Carabobo State, Venezuela, classified according to their degree of adiposity. It was a cross-sectional, descriptive study in which 205 women with a median age of 56 years participated. Adiposity indicators were evaluated: body mass index (BMI), percentage of body fat (PBF), waist circumference (WC), and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR); as well as the lipid profile and the IRCM. High percentages of excess weight (80%), excess body fat (92%), abdominal obesity (61%) and metabolic risk according to the WHtR (69%) were found. Women with obesity showed the lowest values of HDL-C, and those with very high fat, abdominal obesity, and metabolic risk according to the WHtR, the highest values of the TG/HDL index. Other studies are recommended on this population group to better understand the association found between the degree of adiposity and alterations in lipid metabolism to take preventive actions in these disorders related to the metabolic syndrome.


Resumo Durante a menopausa ocorrem alterações metabólicas que favorecem o ganho de peso e a obesidade abdominal, facilitando o desenvolvimento de dislipidemias e aumentando o risco cardiovascular. O objetivo do estudo foi comparar o perfil lipídico e os índices de risco cardiometabólico (IRCM) entre mulheres na pós-menopausa do município de Naguanagua, estado de Carabobo, Venezuela, classificadas de acordo com seu grau de adiposidade. O estudo foi transversal, descritivo, do qual participaram 205 mulheres com mediana de idade de 56 anos. Foram avaliados os indicadores de adiposidade: índice de massa corporal (IMC), percentual de gordura corporal (PGC), circunferência da cintura (CC) e índice cintura/estatura (ICE); bem como o perfil lipídico e o IRCM. Foram encontrados altos percentuais de excesso de peso (80%), excesso de gordura corporal (92%), obesidade abdominal (61%) e risco metabólico segundo o ICE (69%). Mulheres com obesidade apresentaram os menores valores de cHDL, e aquelas com muito alto teor de gordura, obesidade abdominal e risco metabólico segundo o ICE, os maiores valores da relação TG/HDL. Outros estudos neste grupo populacional são recomendados para melhor entender a associação encontrada entre o grau de adiposidade e as alterações no metabolismo lipídico, a fim de tomar ações preventivas nesses distúrbios relacionados com a síndrome metabólica.

Different reports dealt with the role of purslane as an extract against high-fat diet; meanwhile, it was necessary to study the potential role of fresh purslane as a hypolipidemic agent. This study is supposed to investigate further the potential mechanism in the hypolipidemic effect of fresh purslane, by measuring cholesterol 7a-hydroxylase (CYP7A1) and low-density lipoprotein receptor (Ldlr). Rats were divided into two main groups: the first one is the normal control group (n=7 rats) and the second group (n=28 rats) received a high fat diet for 28 weeks to induce obesity. Then the high fat diet group was divided into equal four subgroups. As, the positive control group still fed on a high fat diet only. Meanwhile, the other three groups were received high-fat diet supplemented with a different percent of fresh purslane (25, 50 and 75%) respectively. At the end of the experiment, rats were sacrificed and samples were collected for molecular, biochemical, and histological studies. Current study reported that, supplementation of fresh purslane especially at a concentration of 75% play an important role against harmful effects of high-fat diet at both cellular and organ level, by increasing CYP7A1 as well as Ldlr mRNA expression. Also, there were an improvement on the tested liver functions, thyroid hormones, and lipid profile. Fresh purslane plays the potential role as a hypolipidemic agent via modulation of both Ldlr and Cyp7A, which will point to use fresh purslane against harmful effects of obesity.


O consumo de uma dieta rica em gordura causa um acúmulo prejudicial de gordura no fígado, que pode não reverter mesmo após a mudança para uma dieta mais saudável. Diferentes relatórios trataram do papel da beldroega como um extrato contra uma dieta rica em gordura; entretanto, foi necessário estudar o papel potencial da beldroega fresca como agente hipolipemiante. Este estudo pretende investigar mais profundamente o mecanismo potencial no efeito hipolipidêmico da beldroega fresca, medindo o colesterol 7a-hidroxilase (CYP7A1) e o receptor de lipoproteína de baixa densidade (Ldlr). Os ratos foram divididos em dois grupos principais: o primeiro é o grupo controle normal (n = 7 ratos) e o segundo grupo (n = 28 ratos) recebeu dieta rica em gorduras por 28 semanas para induzir a obesidade. Em seguida, o grupo de dieta rica em gordura foi dividido em quatro subgrupos iguais. Como, o grupo de controle positivo ainda se alimentava apenas com dieta rica em gordura. Enquanto isso, os outros três grupos receberam dieta rica em gordura suplementada com diferentes porcentagens de beldroegas frescas (25%, 50% e 75%), respectivamente. Ao final do experimento, os ratos foram sacrificados e amostras coletadas para estudos moleculares, bioquímica e histológicos. El ayuno intermitente se ha popularizado como una estrategia alternativa para el control de peso y disminución de algunos parámetros bioquímicos. El propósito de esta revisión sistemática fue evaluar la efectividad del ayuno intermitente en dos protocolos: ayuno en días intermitentes (ADA) y ayuno restringido en el tiempo (ART), sobre el perfil lipídico, composición corporal y presión arterial en adultos. Método: Revisión sistemática basada en ensayos controlados aleatorios consultados en las bases de datos: Web of Science, Scopus, Cochrane Library, Clinical Trials, Proquest y PubMed. Se estudió a adultos mayores de 18 años con cualquier estado nutricional. La intervención correspondió a ayuno intermitente de al menos 16 horas. Se evaluaron riesgos de sesgos según la colaboración de Cochrane. Resultados: Se analizaron seis ensayos clínicos, encontrándose que el protocolo ADA, presente en cuatro de ellos, generó cambios en las variables: triglicéridos, c-HDL, c-LDL, colesterol total, peso, masa magra, masa grasa y presión arterial sistólica, mientras que el protocolo ART, presente en los dos restantes, provocó cambios en las variables: peso, masa grasa, masa magra, triglicéridos, colesterol total, c-LDL, c-HDL y glicemia. Conclusión: La evidencia disponible con ensayos clínicos nos permite sugerir que los protocolos ADA y ART pueden ser una dieta alternativa para adultos. Sin embargo, el ajuste calórico y una adecuada educación sobre estilos de vida saludable muestran resultados similares. Sin perjuicio a esto, el AI puede ser una alternativa para aquellos a quienes les es difícil seguir un patrón dietético con restricción calórica diaria.


Intermittent fasting has become popular as an alternative strategy for weight control and the reduction of some biochemical parameters. The purpose of this systematic review (SR) was to evaluate the effectiveness of intermittent fasting in two protocols: intermittent days fasting (ADA) and time-restricted fasting (ART), on lipid profile, body composition and blood pressure among adults. Methods: SR based on randomized controlled trials consulted in the following databases: Web of Science, Scopus, Library Cochrane, Clinical Trials, Proquest and PubMed. Adults over 18 years of age with any nutritional status were studied. The intervention corresponded to intermittent fasting of at least 16 hours. Risk of bias were assessed according to the Cochrane collaboration. Results: Six clinical trials were analyzed, finding that the ADA protocol, present in four of them, generated changes in the variables: triglycerides, c-HDL, c-LDL, total cholesterol, weight, lean mass, fat mass and systolic blood pressure, while the ART protocol, present in the remaining two, caused changes in the variables: weight, fat mass, lean mass, triglycerides, total cholesterol, c-LDL, c-HDL and glycemia. Conclusion: The available evidence with clinical trials allows us to suggest that the ADA and ART protocols can be an alternative diet for adults. However, caloric adjustment and adequate education on healthy lifestyles show similar results. Notwithstanding this, intermittent fasting may be an alternative for those who find it difficult to follow a dietary pattern with daily caloric restriction.

RESUMEN Con el objetivo de describir el perfil lipídico por trimestres de gestación en gestantes sanas, se realizó un estudio descriptivo, de corte transversal, el cual se condujo con 40 embarazadas entre 20 y 35 años, de un universo de 110, pertenecientes al policlínico "Jimmy Hirzel" de Bayamo, Granma, entre enero del 2017 y marzo del 2019. Se determinaron las concentraciones de colesterol total, triglicéridos, HDL-colesterol, LDL-colesterol y VLDL-colesterol. Se utilizó el análisis de varianza de un factor, y la prueba de Tukey de comparación múltiple de parejas de medias. El colesterol, los triglicéridos, el LDL-colesterol y el VLDL-colesterol variaron de forma significativa con el trimestre de gestación. El colesterol total se incrementó en el segundo y tercer trimestre en comparación con el primero, mientras que los triglicéridos, el LDL-colesterol y el VLDL-colesterol se incrementaron en el tercer trimestre en comparación con el primero. El HDL-colesterol no tuvo una variación significativa durante el embarazo. Se concluye que los valores del colesterol total, los triglicéridos, el LDL-colesterol y el VLDL-colesterol varían en relación con el trimestre de la gestación, aumentan de forma significativa en el tercer trimestre en comparación con el primer trimestre del embarazo, en tanto el HDL-colesterol no varía significativamente durante el embarazo.


ABSTRACT In order to describe the lipid profile by trimesters of pregnancy in healthy pregnant women, a descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted with 40 pregnant women between 20 and 35 years of age, from a universe of 110, belonging to the "Jimmy Hirzel" Hospital in Bayamo, Granma, between January 2017 and March 2019. The concentrations of total cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol and VLDL-cholesterol were determined. One-factor analysis of variance was used, and the Tukey's multiple comparison test of pairs of means Cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL-cholesterol, and VLDL-cholesterol varied significantly with gestational trimester total cholesterol increased in the second and third trimesters compared with the first, while triglycerides, LDL-cholesterol and VLDL-cholesterol increased in the third trimester compared to the first. HDL-cholesterol did not have a significant variation time during pregnancy. It is concluded that the values ​​of total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL-cholesterol and VLDL-cholesterol vary in relation to the trimester of pregnancy, they increase significantly in the third trimester compared to the first trimester of pregnancy, while HDL-cholesterol does not vary significantly during pregnancy.


RESUMO Com o objetivo de descrever o perfil lipídico por trimestres de gestação em gestantes saudáveis, foi realizado um estudo descritivo, transversal, com 40 gestantes entre 20 e 35 anos, de um universo de 110, pertencentes ao grupo "Jimmy Hirzel" Hospital em Bayamo, Granma, entre janeiro de 2017 e março de 2019. Foram determinadas as concentrações de colesterol total, triglicerídeos, HDL-colesterol, LDL-colesterol e VLDL-colesterol. Foi utilizada a análise de variância de um fator e o teste de comparação múltipla de Tukey de pares de médias Colesterol, triglicerídeos, LDL-colesterol e VLDL-colesterol variou significativamente com o trimestre gestacional O colesterol total aumentou no segundo e terceiro trimestres em comparação com o primeiro, enquanto os triglicerídeos, LDL-colesterol e VLDL-colesterol aumentaram no terceiro trimestre comparado ao primeiro. O HDL-colesterol não teve variação significativa durante a gravidez. Conclui-se que os valores de colesterol total, triglicerídeos, LDL-colesterol e VLDL-colesterol variam em relação ao trimestre de gestação, aumentam significativamente no terceiro trimestre em relação ao primeiro trimestre de gestação, enquanto o HDL-colesterol não não variam significativamente durante a gravidez.

Introduction: there are controversial data in relation to the reduction in body mass index standard deviation score (BMI-SDS) needed to improve adiposity in the pediatric population with obesity. The aim of this work was to determine the minimum variation in BMI-SDS required to improve the values of adiposity markers and cardiometabolic risk factors in growing adolescents with obesity. Methods: a longitudinal study consisting of clinical evaluation (waist circumference, waist-to-height ratio, fat mass index, and blood pressure) and blood testing (insulin resistance and lipid profile) was conducted in 350 adolescents with obesity (152 boys and 198 girls) aged 10.2-14.3 years who went through a combined intervention (12 months). Results: a decrease in SDS-BMI ≤ 0.5 was not associated with any significant improvement in the clinical features and blood testing recorded. A decrease in BMI-SDS > 0.5, and especially if > 1.0, was linked to a significant improvement in adiposity markers. Introducción: los datos en relación con la reducción del índice de masa corporal (IMC-SDS) necesario para mejorar la adiposidad en la población pediátrica con obesidad son controvertidos. El objetivo de este trabajo es determinar la variación mínima del IMC-SDS necesaria para mejorar los valores de los marcadores de adiposidad y los factores de riesgo cardiometabólico en adolescentes obesos. Métodos: estudio longitudinal clínico (perímetro de cintura, índice cintura-estatura e índice de masa grasa y presión arterial) y analítico (HOMA-R y perfil lipídico) realizado en 350 adolescentes con obesidad (152 niños y 198 niñas) de entre 10,2 y 14,3 años de edad que completaron una intervención combinada (12 meses). Resultados: una disminución en el índice de masa corporal (SDS-BMI) ≤ 0,5 no se asoció con ninguna mejora significativa de las características clínicas y analíticas registradas. Una disminución del IMC-SDS > 0,5, y especialmente si > 1,0, se relacionó con una mejora significativa de los marcadores clínicos de adiposidad. Introduction: Introduction: there are controversial data in relation to the reduction in body mass index standard deviation score (BMI-SDS) needed to improve adiposity in the pediatric population with obesity. The aim of this work was to determine the minimum variation in BMI-SDS required to improve the values of adiposity markers and cardiometabolic risk factors in growing adolescents with obesity. Methods: a longitudinal study consisting of clinical evaluation (waist circumference, waist-to-height ratio, fat mass index, and blood pressure) and blood testing (insulin resistance and lipid profile) was conducted in 350 adolescents with obesity (152 boys and 198 girls) aged 10.2-14.3 years who went through a combined intervention (12 months). Results: a decrease in SDS-BMI ≤ 0.5 was not associated with any significant improvement in the clinical features and blood testing recorded. A decrease in BMI-SDS > 0.5, and especially if > 1.0, was linked to a significant improvement in adiposity markers. ABSTRACT Atherogenic index of plasma is a marker used to assess risk of cardiovascular diseases. The present study evaluated plasma atherogenic index in individuals before and after bariatric surgery. Individuals were evaluated at three time points: before surgery (T0), in the 2nd (T1) and 6th (T2) months post-surgery. Anthropometric (body mass index, waist circumference, fat and lean mass) and biochemical parameters (lipid profile, glucose and C-reactive protein), and atherogenic index of plasma, calculated by the formula [=log (serum triglycerides concentration/HDL cholesterol)], were evaluated. Data were analyzed using the repeated measures ANOVA or Friedman test according to data distribution. The level of significance was 5%. Thirty-four patients agreed to participate. A significant reduction was observed in all anthropometric parameters in women and men (p<0.05). Atherogenic index of plasma reduced significantly in all time points in women; there was a significant reduction only between periods T0 and T2 (p<0.05) in men. A reduction in the classification for risk in cardiovascular diseases, with high risk in T0 (0.441±0.13) to moderate risk at T1 (0.204±0.22) and low risk at T2 (0.041±0.16) was observed in men. In women, the risk remained low (<0.11) in all periods. Bariatric surgery reduced the atherogenic index of plasma during the 6-month follow-up, suggesting a reduction in cardiovascular risk.


RESUMEN El índice aterogénico plasmático es un marcador que se utiliza para evaluar el riesgo de enfermedades cardiovasculares. El presente trabajo evaluó el índice aterogénico plasmático de pacientes antes y después de la cirugía bariátrica. Los individuos fueron evaluados en tres momentos: antes de la cirugía (T0), el segundo (T1) y el sexto (T2) meses después de la cirugía. Se evaluaron parámetros antropométricos (índice de masa corporal, circunferencia de cintura, masa grasa y masa magra), parámetros bioquímicos (perfil lipídico, glucosa y proteína C reactiva) y el índice aterogénico plasmático, calculado mediante la fórmula [= log (concentración sérica de triglicéridos / colesterol HDL)]. Los datos se analizaron mediante el ANOVA de medidas repetidas o el Test de Friedman según la distribución de los datos. Nivel de significancia adoptado 5%. Treinta y cuatro pacientes aceptaron participar en el estudio. Se observó una reducción significativa en todos los parámetros antropométricos en ambos sexos (p<0.05). En las mujeres, el índice aterogénico plasmático disminuyó significativamente en todos los períodos. En los hombres, hubo una reducción significativa en el índice aterogénico plasmático solo entre T0 y T2 (p<0.05), aunque se observó una reducción en la clasificación de riesgo para enfermedades cardiovasculares de alto riesgo en T0 (0.441±0.13) para moderadas riesgo en T1 (0.204±0.22) y riesgo bajo en T2 (0.041±0.16). En las mujeres, el riesgo se mantuvo bajo (<0.11) en todos los períodos. La cirugía bariátrica redujo la PIA durante el seguimiento de 6 meses, lo que sugiere una reducción del riesgo cardiovascular.

La diabetes mellitus es una enfermedad metabólica caracterizada por hiperglucemia, a consecuencia de defectos en la producción, secreción y/o acción de la insulina, produciendo alteraciones en el metabolismo de los hidratos de carbono, lípidos y proteínas; asociado a un proceso inflamatorio crónica en un plazo variable, que provocara lesiones macro y microvasculares. Objetivo: Evaluar los niveles séricos de interleucina-6 (IL-6) en pacientes diabéticos tipo 2 y su correlación con el perfil lipídico. Métodos: Se realizó estudio descriptivo analítico y transversal, comprendido por 60 adultos de ambos sexos entre 30 a 60 años, con diabetes mellitus tipo 2 que acudieron a consulta de Endocrinología del Hospital Militar Universitario Dr. Carlos Arvelo. Se les determino glucemia basal, interleucina-6, perfil lipídico, resultados relacionados con parámetros antropométricos, composición corporal, la edad y tiempo de evolución de la diabetes. Resultados: La edad promedio de 51,60 años ± 6,51, donde el 71,6% correspondieron al sexo femenino y el 28,3% al masculino, tiempo de evolución de la diabetes entre 1 mes y 37 años, con un promedio de 10,97 años. Se presentó correlación positiva baja y estadísticamente significativa entre interleucina 6 y los parámetros de triglicéridos, VLDL y no-HDL Conclusión: Se encontró valores elevados de IL-6 en todos los pacientes diabéticos tipo 2, así como una correlación positiva entre IL-6 y las lipoproteínas ricas en triglicéridos. Esto respalda la idea de que la hipertrigliceridemia puede causar cambios inflamatorios en pacientes diabéticos y esto elevaría el riesgo cardiovascular de estos pacientes(AU)

Introducción: En el embarazo se producen numerosos cambios fisiológicos en las gestantes los cuales pueden llegar a desencadenar potenciales complicaciones y enfermedades cardiovasculares o metabólicas tales como hipertensión gestacional, hiperlipidemia y diabetes mellitus gestacional.Objetivo: Realizar una revisión sistemática de la literatura con objeto de evaluar la relación entre las variaciones del perfil lipídico durante el embarazo y el riesgo de padecer enfermedades metabólicas y cardiovasculares.Métodos: Se ha llevado a cabo una revisión sistemática siguiendo las directrices del modelo PRISMA en la que se incluyeron 22 artículos. Los descriptores empleados incluyeron marcadores del perfil lipídico (HDL, LDL, TG y CT) y las principales patologías metabólicas y cardiovasculares. El idioma se restringió a español e inglés. La revisión fue llevada a cabo durante el año 2019.Resultados: Niveles elevados de colesterol total, LDL y triglicéridos durante el embarazo se asocian con un mayor riesgo de padecer preeclampsia y diabetes mellitus gestacional. Un mayor índice de masa corporal pre gestacional y una mayor ganancia ponderal se relacionan con mayor tasa hiperlipidemia lo cual conlleva a su vez alteraciones vasculares.Conclusiones: Se hace patente la necesidad de reforzar el control preventivo del peso materno trimestral y del perfil lipídico durante la gestación con objeto de prevenir complicaciones del embarazo. Son necesarios estudios centrados en determinados resultados adversos perinatales tales como la macrosomía del recién nacido.(AU)


Background: Various changes occur during pregnancy that, when exacerbated, could progress to metabolic and cardiovascular disorders such as gestational hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and gestational diabetes mellitus.Objective: To conduct a systematic review of the literature that evaluates the association between changes in lipid profile during pregnancy and the risk of developing metabolic and cardiovascular disorders.Methods: We conducted a PRISMA systematic review of scientific databases. A total of 22 articles were finally included. Used search terms consisted of lipid profile biomarkers (HDL, LDL, triglycerides, total cholesterol) in combination with the most important metabolic and cardiovascular disorders. Language was restricted to Spanish and English. The review was conducted during 2019.Results: High levels of total cholesterol, LDL and triglycerides during pregnancy were found to be associated with increased risk of developing preeclampsia and gestational diabetes mellitus. Higher pre-gestational BMI and elevated gestational weight gain were associated with increase rates of hyperlipidemia which is closely related to vascular pathologies.Conclusions: Fostering routine control of maternal weight during all trimesters of gestation and monitoring the lipid profile throughout pregnancy is necessary to prevent pregnancy adverse outcomes. New studies focused on specific perinatal outcomes such as neonatal macrosomia are required.(AU)

Antecedentes: La obstrucción venosa retiniana (OVR) se relaciona fundamentalmente con los factores de riesgo vascular (FRV). Objetivos: Analizar el perfil lipídico y las concentraciones séricas de ácido fólico, vitamina B12 y homocisteína, en pacientes con OVR y un grupo control poblacional. Pacientes y métodos: Estudio de casos y controles. Los pacientes con OVR fueron estudiados a lo largo de un periodo de 11 años.Resultados: Se incluyeron 368 casos y 325 controles de similar edad y sexo. En los pacientes con OVR respecto a los controles, las concentraciones de HDL colesterol y de ácido fólico fueron menores (52 [43-63] mg/dL vs. 55 [46-66]; p = 0,016 y 7 [5-10] ng/mL vs. 9 [7-13]; p < 0,0001, respectivamente) y las de colesterol no HDL y de homocisteína fueron mayores (148,9 ± 37,3 mg/dL vs. 142,9 ± 3; p = 0,03 y 13,4 [11,2-18,2] μmol/L vs. 11,1 [9,0-14,4]; p < 0,0001). Aunque las cifras de colesterol total, cLDL y triglicéridos fueron mayores y las concentraciones de vitamina B12 fueron menores en los pacientes con OVR, estas diferencias no fueron significativas. Conclusiones: Los pacientes con OVR tienen concentraciones más bajas de colesterol HDL y de ácido fólico y cifras de colesterol no HDL y homocisteína más elevadas que los controles poblacionales de similar edad y sexo. En estos pacientes, además del perfil lipídico, podría ser útil la determinación de la homocisteína, el folato y la vitamina B12, así como el tratamiento de sus alteraciones.(AU)


Background: Retinal vein occlusion (RVO) is mainly related with vascular risk factors (VRF). Objectives: To analyze the lipid profile and serum folate, vitamin B12 and homocysteine levels, in patients with RVO and a population-based control group. Patients and Methods: Case-control study. Patients with RVO were assessed during an 11-year period. Results: We included 368 patients and 325 controls of similar age and sex. HDL cholesterol and folate levels were lower (52 [43-63] mg/dL vs. 55 [46-66]; p = 0.016 and 7 [5-10] ng/mL vs. 9 [7-13]; p < 0.0001, respectively) and non-HDL cholesterol and homocysteine levels higher (148.9 ± 37.3 mg/dL vs. 142.9 ± 34.5; p = 0.03 and 13.4 [11.2-18.2] μmol/L vs. 11.1 [9.0-14.4]; p < 0.001) in patients with RVO than controls. Although total cholesterol, LDL-C, and triglyceride levels were higher and serum vitamin B12 levels were lower in RVO patients, these differences did not reach statistical significance. Conclusions: RVO-patients have lower serum HDL-C and folate levels and higher non-HDL-C and serum homocysteine levels than population-based controls of similar age and sex. In patients with RVO, apart from the lipid profile, determination of serum homocysteine, folate and vitamin B12 levels might be useful, as well as the treatment of their alterations.(AU)
